We oppose any extension of the war in Afghanistan

On March 15th, 2008, protests will take place around the world to demand the end of the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. On this same day in 2003, hundreds of thousands marched through the streets of Montreal and across Quebec to denounce the US war of aggresssion against Iraq.

Five years later, this war continues to cause untold suffering to the people of Iraq, who are trying to defend their sovereignty and resist the occupation of their country. We understand very clearly that the war of occupation in Iraq is closely linked to NATO’s war in Afghanistan. We are not fooled by the justifications of Harper, Bush and their friends who claim that these wars are waged “to fight terrorism“ or “to defend democracy and women’s rights“. These wars are being pursued in blatant violation of international law and their sole aim is to allow the US to expand its domination over that part of the world.

The economic and political elites of Canada and Quebec have made the decision, without any public debate, to align themselves with this policy of domination in order to deepen their partnership with the US and reap the benefits of these wars of agression. At the very moment that our governments are telling us that they lack funds to cover the cost of our health and education systems, at the very moment that millions are finding it difficult to find affordable housing and decent work, the “Defence” budget is set to reach nearly 20 billion dollars.

As Conservatives and Liberals have agreed to prolong the presence of Canadian troops in Afghanistan by at least three years,
• we say: don’t extend it, END IT!
• we demand a foreign policy that honours international law and respects the right of sovereign people to determine their own future
• we demand that our collective wealth be used to meet economic and social needs here and abroad rather than to enrich the military industry

Canadian troops out of Afghanistan NOW!
NO to the Canada-US military partnership.
