The brochure begins by describing the rapid surge of militaristic fervor that has gripped Canada and Quebec since the election of the Liberal Party of Canada in 2025. Questioning whether an imminent threat truly looms over our society, it seeks to identify the real issue behind this state of high alert that has swept across all Western countries. While the benefits we are promised are dubious, to say the least, the social and environmental impacts, as well as the consequences for women, civil liberties, and democracy, look set to be disastrous. Against the backdrop of the rise of the far right and new forms of fascism around the world, for the very survival of humanity, we must at all costs reject the war-mongering logic that is being imposed on us.
INTRODUCTION :
Against the backdrop of growing global tensions, the new arms race launched by the United States and its allies bodes ill for Canada and the world. It threatens to drive the final nails into the coffin of international law, leaving only the law of the jungle. It also risks plunging us into an even more dangerous cycle of sanctions, aggression and cataclysmic wars that could jeopardize the very survival of humanity.
With the drums of war beating, arms dealers are already rubbing their hands at the prospect of massive profits. But the colossal amounts that will be poured into armaments and war, in Quebec and Canada, will swallow up resources needed to meet basic needs: housing, food, health care, education, environmental protection and infrastructure. These needs are even more pressing for Indigenous peoples and the growing numbers of marginalized people in our society.
